On New Chapters (and My New Chapter)
Andy Sparks announces the launch of Hoo Boy, a new newsletter focused on business building and workplace culture. The publication replaces previous iterations called "Andy's Newsletter" and "Coach Class."
About Hoo Boy
The newsletter targets "people who are building a company and care deeply about making that company a place people love to work at." It covers insights and resources for entrepreneurs of all scales, from solo operators to large organizations. Publishing twice monthly, the name reflects Sparks' personal exclamation when stepping back from his desk at day's end.
Sparks emphasizes his commitment stems from extensive preparation: two months of reflection before public announcement, alignment work on his broader mission, and a one-year publishing guarantee.
The Cycle of Renewal
This week's featured concept comes from Frederic Hudson's The Adult Years (1991). The framework contrasts linear life progression (school, career, marriage, retirement) with cyclical patterns of renewal.
Four Stages:
- "Go for it" - Initial excitement with new endeavors
- "The doldrums" - Stagnation requiring decision-making
- "Cocooning" - Reflective transition period for major changes
- "Getting ready" - Exploration and experimentation phase
"People hate being here, because they're in-between an end and a beginning. Most people rush through it and that's why they end up with a less-than-ideal new thing."
