Why We MUST Do What Has Never Been Done

About a month ago I came across and article that had a huge list of human accomplishments we have yet to complete. It was a list of opportunities begging a generation of dreamers to become doers and heroes. I can’t seem to find the article right now, but it stirred up this wild dormant craving for adventure I haven’t been able to ignore.

I kept thinking to myself, dammit, man. We are adventurers.

“Doing what has never been done before is intellectually seductive, whether or not we deem it practical.” – Neil deGrasse Tyson

Neil deGrasse Tyson is one of the most inspiring and forward-thinking people I have ever had the pleasure of hearing speak. I sure would like more people to think like Neil thinks, but even Neil doesn’t go far enough (no offense Neil).

Doing what has never been done before is not just intellectually seductive; it is necessary. It is paramount to the survival of our species. It is who we are at our very core. We are meant to be explorers and pioneers. Deep down inside of us all is a need to do the new because dammit man, we are adventurers.

THIS is why NASA and SpaceX matter. This is why the Olympics matter. This is why the Internet matters. We are on a quest for a glimpse of how we – humanity – can exist in a more mature and excellent form.

To get there requires courage to chase after the unknown and vanquish it into the archives of human “been-there-done-thats.” The unknown, however, deals with two very strong human emotions: hope and fear. We all want to believe in a better future but it is easy to become cynical when one looks at humanity in the mirror. Doing what has never been done before proves hope isn’t hopeless. It validates the optimist, has the potential to convert the pessimist, or inspire she who is hesitant as to which future to believe in.

There are quests and adventures awaiting individuals in every single field you can imagine. Sir Aubrey de Grey is a biologist and one hell of an adventurer seeking to push the envelope of biological possibility. He even has an epic beard. There’s a crew of serious people at Oculus creating what might be the first very real “truly immersive virtual reality” gaming console called the Rift. Men who landed on the moon inspired a generation. They did what JFK called “the other things,” which we do “not because they are easy, but because they are hard.” We do them because they have not been done.

We do them because dammit man, we are adventurers.

Each of us deserves a quest that makes us come alive or BE ON FIRE as FAKEGRIMLOCK says. Those quests (things that have never been done before) are out there waiting for each one of us to take it upon ourselves to chart a path towards the betterment of humanity. Don’t disappoint tomorrow. Commit your life to doing something that has never been done before, or at least vehemently supporting the new. We owe it to ourselves and we owe it to the future of humanity because the truth is, the future is ours.*
